For City Council Seat
Says He’ll Be Advocate For Development

By JOHN W. SIMMS
Special to the Chronicle

John A. Pettis Jr., who described himself as a “businessman and community advocate,” said he will be a candidate for the Ward 7 seat on the City Council.
If elected, he said he will become an advocate for economic development and jobs, as well as for “high quality public transportation, better streets and sidewalks and safe parks for our children.”
In 1999, he was appointed to serve on the Youth Council of the Central Oklahoma Workforce Investment Board.
Commonly known as Workforce Oklahoma, that group works to help young people get the education and vocational skills as they prepare to get jobs.
He said he has been a consultant for various political campaigns, and said he is now leading “a national coalition comprised of White House officials, congressional and civil rights leaders” to improve federal equal employment opportunity regulations.
“I will fight for Ward 7 to get its share of city bond projects that will lead to high quality jobs and growth opportunities for local businesses,” Mr. Pettis said in a statement.
Mr. Pettis serves on the board of directors of the Last Frontier Council of the Boy Scouts of America and the Oklahoma Minority Institute of Minority Affairs.
He is a member of the Faith, Hope & Love Baptist Church and the Bright Day Masonic Lodge of Alaraf Temple Prince Hall Shriners.
